Following Xiaopeng Motors' release of the 4C battery and 800V high-voltage fast charging technology, recently, Li Auto announced its 5C battery 800V high-voltage fast charging technology, which claims to be able to achieve a record of charging for 9 and a half minutes to achieve 400 kilometers of range. So, what is a 5C battery? What is the difference between it and related batteries such as 4C, 3C, and 2C?
First of all, we need to know why they are called 1C, 2C, 3C, 4C, and 5C:
1C: The battery is fully charged within one hour (60 minutes).
2C: The battery is fully charged within half an hour (30 minutes).
3C: The battery is fully charged within three-quarters of an hour (20 minutes).
4C: The battery is fully charged within four-fifths of an hour (15 minutes).
5C: The battery is fully charged within five-sixths of an hour (12 minutes).
There is no fixed ratio between them. Typically, the capacity of a battery is called 1C. 1C charging refers to charging the battery for one hour to fully charge it. If the capacity of a battery is 1.5Ah, then 1C charging is equivalent to 1.5A. For a 3Ah battery, 1C charging is equivalent to 3A. In other words, the amount of current (A) for 1C charging depends on the capacity of the battery.
